PROJECT

Hydro-Quebec, Quebec Arctic

DATES

Spring 2017 – (on-going)

DESCRIPTION

Design and fabrication of electricity production and storage systems for a telecom network in Québec Northern regions.

LE DÉFI

Hydro-Québec was looking for a reliable and continuous energy source for many of its telecommunication locations in the Québec Arctic. Rematek Energy replied by designing a self-standing cabinet containing all components required to manage and store electricity produced by solar panels. The cabinet also allowed recording of system (voltage, current, power produced and consumed) and weather data all during its whole throughout its lifetime. We also developed data tracking and analysis software allowing users to control various system variables and to analyze performance as well as alarms in case of failure. This complex system comprising eighteen 345W Monocrystalline modules, galvanized steel supports, three MPPT Charge regulators, six Lithium-ion batteries good for 23.4kWh, two 375 and 1200VA sine inverters, two 48Vdc/12Vdc converters of 500 and 100W, a data acquisition system, a 240Vca/48Vdc (4kW) charger and three temperature sensors plus one heated pyranometer was incorporated into a unit designed to operate reliably in temperatures as low as -30°C.

RESULT

Units commissioned to this day have allowed validation of system operation and have already resulted in significant cost savings in the use of diesel fuel for emergency power generators, as well as deployment of maintenance and repair teams. The project also won the Quebec association for energy management Energia award in the Technological Innovation category.
